UI & App Ideation (plus design resources)

ideasGetting Started

  • What problem does your idea solve?
  • Who is going to use this?
  • What do we need to solve this problem?

Make the plan

Wireframe the UI by quickly sketching the most common ways to move through and organize your feature list.

  • Download a printable for iOS or for Android
  • Make sure to include the descriptions of where each element (button/field) goes and what action is expected

STOP! Informal survey time

  • Draw the wireframes without the directions.
  • Cut up your drawings.
  • Ask a person to pretend tap your paper app or get fancy with this: https://popapp.in
  • Watch a video of paper prototyping here
  • Have them talk the entire time. Learn where they get stuck and what they assume happens.

Build the final UI

Digitize this UI with your new feedback and make the design real – for a Hackathon use a much stock UI as possible. Refer to a GUI (graphical user interface) sheet for what comes stock.

Get fancy and build the actual design in a program like Photoshop or Sketch (we luuuurrrrrve Sketch – there’s a 30 day free trial and you can export art for all Android and iOS sizes (1x, 2x, 3x or hdpi, xhdpi, etc)
